Talking with Sabrina Bellaouel means engaging into a fruitful dialogue with an artist referencing the progressive rock of Gentle Giants, the neo-soul of Sade, the flamenco she practiced for two years, the hits of Timbaland and the pop explorations of Radiohead in the same sentence.
Discrete as she is, one might have the impression that Sabrina Bellaouel has released only few projects in recent years. That is not true: first there was the EP in 2016 (produced by Myth Syzer, Loubenski and Rahman), then 'Illusions' in 2018, which aimed to marry the seductive immediacy of R&B with the onirism of a music raised in weightlessness, a contemplation of melodies that revive memories but forbid any form of nostalgia. There were also all these duets with different artists of the Parisian scene, from The Hop to Jazzy Bazz, through Ichon or Bonnie Banane. But there were also months spent searching for musical identity, favoring formal research over repetition, rarity over abundance, aesthetic ambiguity over linear melodies.
Now the Frenchwoman can move with such ease from an electronic project ('We Don’t Need To Be Enemies') to an EP that fits more into the R&B landscape ('Libra'), packed with melodies that belong only to her, both dense and full of space, which alternate in acrobatic dynamics between silky refrains and electronic tilts. Sabrina Bellaouel is a "Kahena" of modern times, freed from musical borders, combining the avant-gardism of Laurel Halo, Mica Levi and Eartheater, with the sensitive futurism of Kelela and FKA Twigs.
